  • MYP Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition
Student at Beau Soleil with their Grade 10 MYP Project

MYP Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition

The Grade 10 Personal Project is a cornerstone of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed to foster independent learning, critical thinking, and project management and ultimately, prepare grade 10 for the challenges of the IB DP/ASDP programme.

Each student selects a topic based on personal interest, sets learning and product goals, and devises a plan to achieve them. This process includes creating success criteria and following a strategic plan to realize their objectives. The final component is a reflective written report, assessed against MYP standards, which encapsulates their learning and challenges.

Project highlights

The diversity and creativity of the projects this year were truly remarkable, reflecting the unique passions and skills of each student. Here are some standout projects:

  • The Science of Scents: One student delved into the world of fragrance, learning the intricate art of making candles and perfumes. This project not only explored the chemistry behind scents but also allowed the student to create custom fragrances.
  • Fashion Forward: Another aspiring designer showcased their talent by designing and sewing a dress. This project combined skills in fashion design and tailoring, bringing a sketch to life as a wearable garment.
  • Enhancing Sports Performance: Several students produced instructional videos on sports skills, such as soccer tricks and basketball techniques. These projects aimed to educate others while enhancing their own understanding and abilities in sports.
  • Outdoor Innovations: From designing a specialized fishing fly to increase catch rates to creating a warm dog coat for winter, these projects addressed practical needs by applying design and engineering principles.
  • Redesigning Athletic Spirit: A particularly exciting development was the redesign of school sports team kits for our girls' basketball and boys' football teams. These designs brought a fresh look and could potentially be adopted for actual use, boosting team spirit and school identity.

The Personal Project Exhibition not only showcases student projects but also serves as a platform for reflection and growth. As they present their work, students engage with the school community, receiving feedback and celebrating their achievements. This interaction is invaluable as it enhances their communication skills and boosts their confidence.

The Personal Project is more than just an academic requirement; it is a journey of personal and intellectual growth. It prepares students for future challenges by fostering a range of skills from analytical thinking to creative problem-solving. As we look back on this year's exhibition, we are reminded of the incredible potential and creativity of our students, who continue to inspire us with their capacity for innovation and excellence.

ChatGPT at Beau Soleil: Balancing Cognitive Load and Responsible Use

AI is transforming education, with ChatGPT leading the way by making learning more accessible and personalised. It reduces cognitive load, enabling students to focus on comprehension and creativity. Through workshops, we’ve shown how ChatGPT simplifies learning tasks like creating study plans and summarising readings, helping students tackle complex projects and understand ethical challenges like plagiarism. Integrating AI literacy into our curriculum prepares students for a tech-driven future, equipping them with the skills to navigate and succeed in an automated world.

From 17g to Industry Leader: What We Learned About Coffee Trading at Walter Matter

Ami and William, Heads of Development and Social Media at 17g, reflect on their internship at Walter Matter, a coffee and cacao trading company in Geneva. During their time, they gained insight into various departments such as sustainability, where they learned about geolocating farms to comply with EU environmental regulations, and trading, where they observed how global conflicts impact coffee prices. A highlight of their experience was participating in coffee cupping and roasting sessions, evaluating coffee quality for major clients. The internship broadened their understanding of the coffee industry and inspired them to apply similar practices at 17g.
